The inventory is made via the following key activities:
Strategically select research sites;
Identify informants via market vendors, hotel staff, and taxi drivers;
Field trip with informants and sample edible insect species and their host plants;
Semi-structured questionnaire on local ecological knowledge and basic usage of the species with informants;
Specimen preparation in accordance with standard entomological and botanical methods;
Species identification by entomology and botany experts; and
Imaging and storing of specimens.
- Create an online knowledge bank of edible insects in Madagascar including images, distribution, life histories, and feasibility for mass rearing assessments; and
- Investigate attitudes toward insects as food and analyze the implication of these findings for the commercialization of insects for food in Madagascar.
