The edible Asian weaver ant Oecophylla smaragdina was the focal species of my PhD project. The weaver ant is an excellent biological control agent and benefits fruit production. While the worker ants protect the fruit by foraging on pest insects, the larvae and pupae that are destined to become new queens are of economic and cultural value as human food. I envisage a multi-production system of (i) organic tree crops and (ii) larvae and pupae of the edible Asian weaver ant Oecophylla smaragdina in Southeast Asia. The multi-production system is sustainable because it reduces the need for chemical control of pest insects and because the harvesting of the ant larvae and pupae does not have a negative effect on the biocontrol efficacy of the weaver ant. Few adults may be used as a condiment. Due to their sour taste, the weaver ant is called the sour ant.
